tintii on the Mac App Store

Tintii 2.5.1 for Mac is now available from the Mac App Store. This new version features some useful new features for the standalone application: more control over the panes of the user interface, easy access to recently opened files, and recalibrated saturation and lightness sliders for more sensitive control. A few minor tweaks have also been necessary to comply with the Apple Human Interface Guidelines.

Note that the version distributed through the Mac App Store does not include the Photoshop plugin, as Apple will only distribute standalone applications, not plugins, through this medium. Obtaining tintii this way will let you easily manage updates as new versions are released, however.

The new features are expected to be released for Linux, Windows and for the Photoshop plugin on both Mac and Windows platforms in the coming weeks. Until then, the download page has not been updated — use the Mac App Store to get your hands on this fresh release.

A major update of tintii has been released with a raft of new features to take the filter beyond simple selective colour effects. The core of tintii remains the same, with its unique ability to automatically select the dominant colours of a photo. The program now supports hue, saturation and lightness adjustments on individual colours, as well as a new “Hardness” postprocessing slider that is particularly useful when working with subtle gradients.

In addition to these new features, the interface has been given a fresh look to better position controls. A full online help system has been included for the first time also, documenting all controls and providing some advice on how best to achieve the right effect.

The new version may be downloaded for Linux, Mac and Windows here.

tintii v2.3.0 Released

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Version 2.3.0 of tintii is now available from the usual place. The main aim of this release is compatibility — tintii now supports 64-bit Photoshop CS4 & CS5 on Windows and 64-bit Photoshop CS5 on the Mac. Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) support is in there too. The one unfortunate side effect is that I’ve had to remove support for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) in order to update the source for these later platforms. Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later is now required; the older version will still work on Tiger of course.

Note that both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are now consolidated in the one file on both Windows and Mac. The standalone version will operate in 32-bit only, but the plugin version in 32- or 64-bit as required.

I’d like to thank Roger Williamson for providing the new icon in version 2.3.0 — for Mac users in particular tintii should now happily sit alongside all those other applications on your dock!

I have not made a source release for Linux (and other Unix variants) this time around, for two reasons. Firstly, no new features have been added, so there is little point. Secondly, in order to support 64-bit Cocoa on Mac I’ve had to use wxWidgets 2.9, which is still in development and not readily available in distros. If 2.9 is not stable by the time of my next update, I’ll be trying to backport to 2.8, which shouldn’t require much effort.

64-bit tintii for Photoshop CS4 on Windows available

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

An experimental version of the tintii plugin for users of 64-bit Photoshop CS4 on Windows is now available. It may be downloaded from here. A couple of minor bug fixes have also been made to the 32-bit Windows, Mac and Linux releases, all of this coming under a new version number of 2.2.3.

The standard version of tintii will work for most users. The 64-bit version is only required if you are specifically using the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4 on Windows. As this version is very fresh, please let me know whether or not it works for you.
